First things first, a warm welcome to our newest (and at 18, youngest) team member, Calvin. Calvin has only been with us for a few weeks, but he’s already impressed us with his professionalism and work ethic, and now he’s only gone and won Silver in a national competition! On the 13th and 14th of November, Calvin attended the WorldSkills UK Web Development Competition (Advanced), at the Skills Show 2014 in NEC, Birmingham.
The show featured 600 competitors, participating in competitions for a wide variety of subjects such as video editing, games design, forensic science and much more. The area in which Calvin competed was Web Development.
On the first day of the competition, the competitors were tasked with creating a responsive website from a design they were provided with. The work they produced was rated on the efficiency of the code and methods they used (HTML and CSS3) in addition to how well they complied with the criteria. In the afternoon, they had to write up a login system in PHP where users could login and view stats from information we were provided with.
Day two involved an even bigger task: the participants were given the brief of developing a website for a new marketing agency – so this involved producing a “moodboard” to decide on colors and develop wireframes. From there, they had to design the whole thing, implement it into a functioning website using latest technologies, and also add a contact form that would insert results into a database.
Calvin says of his experience: “The competition was a great way to see what I’m capable of and to advance my skills in Web Development after being given advice by the judges. The show as a whole was very fun to attend, and it truly shows you the types of opportunities that are available out there. I would most certainly like to attend again in the future”
Well done Calvin, we’re very proud of you!
